Community and Charities

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Foodsmiths has deep roots in Perth and Lanark, and we understand how important it is to give back to the community we live in and to those in need. We proudly support these important initiatives, local charities, and events...

Foodsmiths Bring Your Own Bag Charity

BYOB Donation Program

Imagine a world free of plastic bags! To encourage the re-use of grocery bags and to provide a source of funds for local charitable organizations, we have our BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag Donation Program. For every re-usable bag our customers bring in that saves the use of a new plastic bag, a donation by Foodsmiths is made to the Charity of the Month. Not only are thousands of plastic bags saved from going to landfill, the donations generated help support charities. We call it a WIN-WIN!

NEW! Our BYOB has been around for 10 years, and beginning in 2016 we are changing the format of donations. We are initiating a new 5¢ "Charity" charge for every new plastic bag used. The 5¢ will go directly to Foodsmiths Charity of the Month. When customers bring in their own reusable bag, Foodsmiths will donate the 5¢! It's a great way to save plastic bags and support local charities!

Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Foodsmiths has partnered with Empty Bowls since 2004, holding the fundraiser on site, and coming up with a recipe that highlights healthy, nutritious food. With the generous support of suppliers, and the help of the staff, a delicious meal is created to fill locally handcrafted and unique ceramic bowls, which are set up in the store throughout the month of March prior to the event and can be purchased for $25. All proceeds go to local sustainable food programs: The Table Community Food Centre, YAK Youth Centre, and Food for Thought Breakfast and Snack programs in Lanark County Schools. Donations to Empty Bowls are welcome year round: Empty Bowls.ca Watch for this event in April.

Foodsmiths weekly food donations

Weekly Food Donations

Foodsmiths annually contributes over $28,000 worth of food to local food banks on a regular weekly basis. Our staff and suppliers work together to provide vital food products to The Table Community Food Centre and Lanark County Food Bank, with pick-ups three times a week. These food donations are often the most needed items for food banks to provide on a daily basis, like vegetables and fruit from our produce dept., dairy items such as milk, eggs and yogurt, breads from our bakery, and grocery items such as soups, cereals and crackers. The time and commitment needed to coordinate these donations is substantial, but the effort is well worth it: we help give local families access to healthy food, and at the same time, we eliminate the wasteful industry practice of throwing away good food due to cosmetic reasons. We think it's a win-win situation!
