Golden Milk with Fresh Turmeric and Ginger

This isn't your Grandma's bedtime mug of warm milk! Golden milk is a lovely, warming, spicy drink with plenty of flavour, and it is perfect for enjoying just before bed. Fresh turmeric and ginger enhance the absorption, along with the piperine in the black pepper. Leave the shredded turmeric and ginger in the drink, or strain, depending on your preference. As well, add more milk or water if you find the drink too spicy. Regular consumption of Golden Milk works as a potent anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. This recipe makes a couple mugs, so share with a loved one! A word of caution: turmeric will stain your cutting board and fingers.

You will need...

2 cups unsweetened coconut milk, almond, or your favourite nut milk
1 tbsp peeled, freshly grated ginger root
1 tbsp peeled, freshly grated turmeric root
2 or 3 peppercorns, or a fresh grating of pepper
2 tsp fresh, local honey
A sprinkle of your fave spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg or anise (if desired)

Put it together...

Combine the milk, ginger root, turmeric root, and pepper in a saucepan. Heat over low heat and let simmer gently, covered, for 10 minutes, whisking once in a while to spread the goodness. Strain into a couple mugs and add honey. Sprinkle with spices.
