This is a quick, easy and impressive appetizer to share with your guests. You can decorate it with grape tomatoes and cut out pieces of cheese or leave it plain.
I did a small one using 1 sheet of puff pastry but if you want a larger one for a bigger crowd use both sheets.
Ingredients
-
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
-
basil pesto, about ¼ cup
-
1 egg, beaten for egg wash
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375°. Cut the puff pastry in half. Cut each half into a Christmas tree shape. Place one piece on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Spread with the pesto, right to the edges. Top with the second tree shape.
Cut strips 3/4" thick, leaving the centre intact for the trunk.
Twist each section 3 or 4 times, pressing down to hold it in place.
Cut a scrap piece into a star shape and press it on the top. Brush the top with the egg. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Use the remaining dough to make pesto tomato bites.
Cut the dough into small circles. Spread pesto onto the circles, top with a slice of tomato. Season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
